Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the joint cartilage's capacity for repair and the potential of various biological tissues as replacements for damaged cartilage. METHODS: We operated 30.3 months old, lambs, creating a chondral lesion which was left untreated in group I and treated with a fresh chondral implant in group III, a frozen chondral implant in group IV, and a frozen periostal implant in group V; in group II the lesion extended as far as the subchondral bone. The lesions were performed in the loading area of the medial condyle of the knee. Follow-up time was 6 months, and the results were assessed histologically. RESULTS: In the chondral lesions which remained untreated (group I), degeneration of the exposed layers occurred, and loss of both cartilage thickness and homogeneity of the matrix was noted. Where the lesion extended as far as the subchondral bone (group II), repair was found to have taken place with a fibrous tissue indistinguishable from cartilage. When cartilage was implanted (group III and IV), the integration of the implant depended on wether there was any contact between the implant and the surrounding tissue. DISCUSSION: The integrity of the fresh implants was maintained better than that of the frozen ones, which were found to contain cells with a proliferative capacity. When periosteum was placed over the chondral lesion, we observed the formation of a very loose fibrous tissue in which the initial stages of differentiation could be appreciated in the deepest layers.

Abstract: The understanding of the competition between different substances while condensing on a cold surface is of high interest in situations in which it is desirable to control their condensation rates and the formed morphologies. We do the experiments for mixtures of water and hexamethyldisiloxane vapors at several concentrations. The dropwise condensation of the vapors forms breath figures on a substrate that is repellant to both substances. We report the average radius of the drops for each specie as a function of time. Also, we pay attention to the evolution of the corresponding morphologies and the appearance of hybrid clusters.

This doctoral dissertation presents the study of the spatial mobility of foreing-born immigrants (Moroccan, Ecuadorian, Romanian, French, Argentinians and British) living in Spain, and their migratory itineraries. Mobility and routes have two geographical perspectives to their study, at the international level, following immigrants since they first came out of their country of birth, and at the national level studying their intermunicipal and interprovincial movements after their arrival in Spain. To provide a comprehensive backdrop of these mobility patterns, the work also presents an overview of the characteristics of these populations and their localization patterns and spatial distribution in Spain. The main sources we use are a classical source, the Municipal Register, and a novel one, the National Immigrant Survey, rich in information that allows the reconstruction of the life history of each immigrant interviewed. The study includes a comparison of the main migratory origins by analyzing the distribution by period of arrival, time of access to Spanish nationality, average age of arrival in Spain, family migration patterns, educational attainment index by sex, situation in relation to the activity, intensity of international and inter-municipal migration and, finally, the characteristics of immigrants who migrated directly, lived in another country, and in two or more. It also analyzes the characteristics of immigrants who do not move from their municipality or province of arrival and those who do. The latter comparisons are made between stayers and dynamics between different origins and migration. The research results show how different migration patterns respond to different explanatory factors, largely associated with the country of origin. These internal contrasts are sometimes the result of heterogeneity in the group, the French case; in others, such as the Argentina, due to the variety of profiles associated with migration timing and causes of this migration; due to internal migration strategies in the context of social networks, case of the Romanians, or cultural contexts marked by gender differences, the Moroccans. Another factor explaining the various patterns of mobility is associated with return migration chains of previous generations, second or third.

Author(s) : Vázquez-del-Rey-Villanueva, A. (Antonio)
The legal approach to VAT has been traditionally weighed down by some economic
considerations as well as by a too formalistic approach. From that perspective, VAT
should not be regarded as a turnover tax, as it is usually seen in the EU environment.
Moreover, for the purposes of a legal approach it is necessary to differentiate between
the goal of VAT, which is to levy a tax on consumption, and the mechanism by which
that result is intended. In the first case, one must not oversize the existence of some
exceptions to the ordinary functioning of VAT; otherwise, there is a risk of distorting
the truth as regards the justification of the tax on the ability to pay principle. Regarding
specifically the tax mechanism, the most widespread notion cannot be accepted either
as its excessive formalism also leads to a somehow distorted view. The chargeable event always involves the payment of the tax, however, both the collection from customers
and the right of deduction are key elements which do not allow categorizing VAT ́s
legal structure within the traditional tax law categories.

Author(s) : Aurell, J. (Jaume); Rubiés, J.P. (Joan-Pau)
------------------------------------------ The study of medieval merchants has often suffered from a distortion derived from the image of pre-capitalist economic agents whose behaviour is inspired by typically bourgeois cultural values. On the basis of a more rigorous definition of this social group, this article uses the case of medieval Barcelona in order to develop an hypothesis concerning the evolution of merchants throughout the late medieval crisis and the beginning of the Renaissance. The analysis seeks to relate predominant models of social mobility with the political identity of the medieval city and the culture characteristic of merchants. Thus, the article establishes a dynamic model in which the social role of the merchant-entrepreneur open to risks is relativised with reference to a model of social ascent which is patrician-rentier and ultimately aristocratic. This process is interpreted in the light of the particular evolution of the Crown of Aragon through the late medieval crisis and the following centuries, stressing, on the one hand, the precariousness of Barcelona as an economic centre, and, on the other hand, the political failure of the model of cooperation between feudal monarchy an autonomous merchants which had characterised the period of expansion. From this context, the cultural evolution of the merchants of Barcelona is interpreted by analysing inventories of their libraries. We stress a remarkable level of reading during the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The moral universe of these merchants can be characterised by the combination of Christian piety and a kind of utilitarian attitude, which seemed to be regulated by the clerical discourse of influential authors like Francesc Eiximenis. With the political decadence of merchants as a social group, and in the context of the full Renaissance, there was however a consolidation of their tendency towards cultural mediocrity.

Abstract: Leptin is secreted by gastric mucosa and is able to reach the intestinal lumen where its receptors are located in the apical membrane of the enterocytes. We have previously demonstrated that apical leptin inhibits sugar and amino acids uptake in vitro and glucose absorption in vivo. Since leptin receptors are also expressed in the basolateral membrane of the enterocytes, the aim of the present work was to investigate whether leptin acting from the basolateral side could also regulate amino acid uptake. Tritiated Gln and β-Ala were used to measure uptake into Caco-2 cells grown on filters, in the presence of basal leptin at short incubation times (5 and 30 min) and after 6 h of preincubation with the hormone. In order to compare apical and basal leptin effect, Gln and β-Ala uptake was measured in the presence of leptin acting from the apical membrane also in cells grown on filters. Basal leptin (8 mM) inhibited by ~15–30 % the uptake of 0.1 mM Gln and 1 mM β-Ala quickly, after 5 min exposure, and the effect was maintained after long preincubation periods. Apical leptin had the same effect. Moreover, the inhibition was rapidly and completely reversed when leptin was removed from the apical or basolateral medium. These results extend our previous findings and contribute to the vision of leptin as an important hormonal signal for the regulation of intestinal absorption of nutrients.

Abstract: Aim: Studies in rodents have shown that leptin controls sugars and glutamine entry in the enterocytes by regulating membrane transporters. Here, we have examined the effect of leptin on sugar and amino acids absorption in the human model of intestinal cells Caco-2 and investigated the transporters involved.
Methods: Substrate uptake experiments were performed in Caco-2 cells, grown on plates, in the presence and the absence of leptin and the expression of the different transporters in brush border membrane vesicles was analysed by Western blot.
Results: Leptin inhibited 0.1 mM α-methyl-D-glucoside uptake after 5 or 30 min treatment, and decreased SGLT1 protein abundance in the apical membrane. Uptake of 20 µM glutamine and 0.1 mM phenylalanine was also inhibited by leptin, indicating sensitivity to the hormone of the Na+-dependent neutral amino acid transporters ASCT2 and B0AT1. This inhibition was accompanied by a reduction of the transporters expression at the brush-border membrane. Leptin also inhibited 1 mM proline and β-alanine uptake in Na+ medium at pH 6, conditions for optimal activity of the H+-dependent neutral amino acid transporter PAT1. In this case, abundance of PAT1 in the brush-border membrane after leptin treatment was not modified. Interestingly, leptin inhibitory effect on β-alanine uptake was reversed by the PKA inhibitor H-89 suggesting involvement of PKA pathway in leptin´s regulation of PAT1 activity.
Conclusion: These data show in human intestinal cells that leptin can rapidly control the activity of physiologically relevant transporters for rich-energy molecules, i.e D-glucose (SGLT1) and amino acids (ASCT2, B0AT1 and PAT1).

Abstract: Human GLUT12 was isolated from the breast cancer cell line MCF-7 by its homology with GLUT4. Glucose has been described as its main substrate, but it also can transport other sugars. In humans, GLUT12 protein is expressed mainly in insulin sensitive tissues. Functional analysis has showed that GLUT12 transports sugars down its concentration gradient, but it can also work as a proton-coupled symporter. Studies from our laboratory, performed in Xenopus laevis oocytes expressing GLUT12, show that glucose uptake increases in the presence of Na+ and induces inward current. These findings suggest a transport mechanism never described for other GLUTs, which would indicate a distinct functional role for GLUT12. In relation with its physiological and pathophysiological function, GLUT12 has been mainly studied due to its role as a secondary insulin-sensitive glucose transporter and its possible implication in impaired insulin signalling pathologies. Its expression in some tumour tissues has been described and recently, it has been proposed as one of the key proteins in the glucose supply to malignant cells. Overall, even though a lot of information about GLUT12 has been released during the last years, its functional characteristics, physiological role or implication in the development of some diseases is still unclear. Therefore, this review of the literature can help to address further investigations needed to elucidate these issues that, in our view, are of great interest mainly due to the direct GLUT12 relation with cancer and probably with diabetes development.

Abstract: Lipid nanoparticles (LN) made of synthetic lipids Compritol® 888 ATO and Precirol® ATO 5 were developed, presenting an average size of 110.4 ± 2.1 nm and 103.1 ± 2.9 nm, for Compritol® and Precirol®, respectively, and encapsulation efficiency above 85 % for both type of lipids. These LN decrease the hemolytic toxicity of the drug by 90 %. Pharmacokinetic and biodistribution profiles of the drug were studied after intravenous and oral administration of edelfosine-containing LN, providing an increase in relative oral bioavailability of 1500 % after a single oral administration of drug-loaded LN, maintaining edelfosine plasma levels over 7 days in contrast to a single oral administration of edelfosine solution, which presents a relative oral bioavailability of 10 %. Moreover, edelfosine-loaded LN showed a high accumulation of the drug in lymph nodes and resulted in slower tumor growth than the free drug in a murine lymphoma xenograft model, as well as potent extranodal dissemination inhibition.

Abstract: Background: Overall diet quality measurements have been suggested as a useful tool to assess diet-disease relationships. Oxidative stress has been related to the development of obesity and other chronic diseases. Furthermore, antioxidant intake is being considered as protective against cell oxidative damage and related metabolic complications.

Objective: To evaluate potential associations between the dietary total antioxidant capacity of foods (TAC), the energy density of the diet, and other relevant nutritional quality indexes in healthy young adults.

Methods: Several anthropometric variables front 153 healthy participants (20.8 +/- 2.7 years) included in this study were measured. Dietary intake was assessed by a validated food-frequency questionnaire, which was also used to calculate the dietary TAG and for daily energy intake adjustment.

Results: Positive significant associations were found between dietary TAG and Mediterranean energy density hypothesis oriented dietary scores (Mediterranean Diet Score, Alternate Mediterranean Diet Score, Modified Mediterranean Diet Score), non-Mediterranean hypothesis oriented dietary scores (Healthy Eating Index, Alternate Healthy Eating Index. Diet Quality Index-International, Diet Quality Index-Revised), and diversity of food intake indicators (Recommended Food Score, Quantitative Index for Dietary Diversity in terms of total energy intake). The Mediterranean Diet Quality Index and Diet Quality Index scores (a Mediterranean and a non Mediterranean hypothesis oriented dietary score, respectively), whose lower values refer to a higher diet quality, decreased with higher values of dietary TAG. Energy density was also inversely associated with dietary TAG.

Conclusion: These data suggest that dietary TAG, as a measure of antioxidant intake, may also be a potential marker of diet quality in healthy subjects, providing a novel approach to assess the role of antioxidant intake on health promotion and diet-based therapies.

Abstract: We analyze the failure process of a two-component system with widely different fracture strength in the framework of a fiber bundle model with localized load sharing. A fraction 0 α 1 of the bundle is strong and it is represented by unbreakable fibers, while fibers of the weak component have randomly distributed failure strength. Computer simulations revealed that there exists a critical composition αc which separates two qualitatively different behaviors: Below the critical point, the failure of the bundle is brittle, characterized by an abrupt damage growth within the breakable part of the system. Above αc, however, the macroscopic response
becomes ductile, providing stability during the entire breaking process. The transition occurs at an astonishingly low fraction of strong fibers which can have importance for applications. We show that in the ductile phase, the size distribution of breaking bursts has a power law functional form with an exponent μ = 2 followed by an exponential cutoff. In the brittle phase, the power law also prevails but with a higher exponent μ = 9 2. Thetransition between the two phases shows analogies to continuous phase transitions. Analyzing the microstructure
of the damage, it was found that at the beginning of the fracture process cracks nucleate randomly, while later on growth and coalescence of cracks dominate, which give rise to power law distributed crack sizes.
