Author(s) : Frutos-Torres, B. (Belinda) de; Sánchez-Valle, M. (María); Vázquez-Barrio, T. (Tamara)
Abstract: This paper aims to examine the values reflected in Internet advertising. To achieve this, a content analysis which identifies the values reflected by advertisements on web sites targeting teenagers, has been performed. Analysis results show that the most frequent values are related to transgression, adventure, materialism, competitiveness and power. The study also reveals a relationship between the target audience and the type of values. Campaigns aimed at youth have a significant presence of transgression, adventure, materialism, power, competitiveness and personal success values, while campaigns aimed at both targets (adults and youth simultaneously) have a significant presence of normative values.

Author(s) : Igartua, J.J. (Juan José); Barrios, I. (Isabel); Ortega, F. (Félix)
Abstract: This article presents the results of a research study into the image of immigration as presented in television fiction, taking Cultivation Theory as a reference. Content analysis was performed on a representative sample of prime-time fictional programming broadcast in 2010 on six television channels. Results show that immigrant characters are under-represented and their construction is based on negative stereotypes. These results are discussed in relation to the role of television fiction in reducing prejudice.

Author(s) : Ferrández-Ferrer, A. (Alicia)

Author(s) : Serrat, J. (Jordi); Fernández-Viader, M.P. (María de Pilar)
Abstract: The Information society is bringing about an increase in the number of information referents for deaf signers (those who use sign language). With the aim of exploring the ways most commonly used by deaf people to find out about current affairs, this paper summarizes some quantitative research that was carried out involving 138 deaf people: 69 in Spain and 69 in the US. The work is complemented qualitatively by a focus group in Gallaudet University, Washington, using American Sign Language (ASL), and by observations from three lecture/ news presentations which took place in Barcelona in Catalan Sign Language (LSC).

Abstract: Based on uses and gratifications theory, the aim of this paper is to identify the reasons for using Internet among teenagers and to check different variables in order to predict types of uses. After conducting a representative survey applied to 397 high school students in Community of Madrid (Spain), Internet users’ gratifications and their relationships with variables related to adolescent characteristics, family context and time of online exposure are analyzed. The article concludes that daily use of Internet predicts higher consumption of communication and social relationships

Author(s) : Fernández-Alonso, I. (Isabel); Fernández-Viso, A. (Ana)
Abstract: This paper examines internal pluralism in the governance of public service broadcasters in Spain, a dimension of pluralism on which very little research has been done in this country. In particular, it analyses the role played by social groups and professionals in the management structures of Spanish public service broadcasters through their participation in the advisory councils and professional councils of such media. Because of its importance, the case of RTVE is discussed at length.

Author(s) : Rothenberger, L. (Liane)
Abstract: In communication science, the question of Europeanisation as well as a theory of interculturalism and multilingualism in the broader context of a ‘European identity’ has long been raised and discussed. Furthermore, empirical research has been searching for adequate methods to find an answer to this question so as to indicate whether the EU media landscape is coming closer together or drifting further apart. The European Culture Channel Arte started broadcasting in 1992. Since then, German and French TV editors have learned from each other how to produce formats appropriate for recipients of both nationalities or even a European audience. This article discusses possible changes towards Europeanisation through rapprochement and convergency exemplified by the French-German culture magazine programme Metropolis as well as by a diachronic scrutiny of changes in Arte’s general programming structure. Organisational theory and intercultural media analysis at micro, meso and macro level are employed as theoretical foundation.

Author(s) : Navarro-Ruiz, C. (Cristina); Humanes-Humanes, M.L. (María Luisa)
Abstract: Blogs have strengthened its position as an online communication tool to increase the dialogue between organizations and their publics, and this thanks to their interactive capacity and easy use. Although blogs didn’t enjoy the popularity and swift penetration of social networks, Spanish companies are gradually incorporating this channel to their Public Relations plans. Thus, it becomes increasingly interesting to develop a quantitative index allowing determining the degree of compliance to excellence criteria. This paper aims to identify the main factors in order to value the quality of a corporate blog, describes the design of the evaluation index and, later, applies this index to study the corporate blogs of the main Spanish companies in order to unveil how they are exploiting its many advantages.

Abstract: This research article analyses the main barriers and motivations in the understanding and acceptance of Galician audiovisual media products by a sample of consumers located in different areas of the Lusophone space, according to the new circulation and consumption modes of audiovisual products. To this end, we examined the influence of the cultural codifiers involved in the acceptance of audiovisual contents by certain communities which, despite of being geographically dispersed, share cultural identity elements. In addition, we analysed the role of formal and linguistic variables in the reception of audiovisual content.

Abstract: To what extent is journalism autonomous from spheres of power in society? In journalism studies, it is widely accepted that political, economic, and professional interests constrain journalists and frustrate independent reporting. Drawing upon previous research on media independence, this article proposes a set of analytical categories to enrich and strengthen the theoretical argument for journalistic autonomy. The proposed categories are in line with Jeffrey Alexander’s cultural sociology. While interests inevitably influence journalists, from a cultural-sociological perspective any journalistic narrative can be interpreted as indicative of cultural values that transcend particular groups, sections, or parties. The categories proposed in this article are applied to media coverage of the 2004 Madrid bombing to illustrate the way in which media narratives that are strongly overshadowed by ideological power spheres may reflect autonomous cultural values that are common to all civil society.
