The author refers to the origin of the dichotomy between art and science, and the relations that confronted intellectuals and writers at the end of the 19th century, in particular novelists like Pío Baroja and Miguel de Unamuno. Naturalism, Darwinism and scientific positivism spurred a debate in the public arena—conferences, interviews—and in the novelesque fictions of both authors, judgments and reflections that do not always coincide in one area of specialization or another. |
