Estella y el Camino de Santiago

Abstract

Estella, como buena parte de las poblaciones históricas, encierra varias ciudades en una. En este caso, cuatro: la jacobea, la mercantil, la militar y la eclesiástica. La vinculación de Estella y el Camino de Santiago se desarrolla revisando someramente los siguientes apartados: el contexto histórico internacional del año mil, que supuso el inicio del florecimiento del desarrollo urbano; los hitos básicos del nacimiento del primer burgo navarro; la dotación de un fuero para la ciudad por parte de Sancho Ramírez, rey de pamploneses y aragoneses; el desarrollo de los primeros barrios, San Martín, San Miguel y San Juan, para concluir con un pequeño apunte sobre el desarrollo demográfico de la ciudad. La segunda parte está referida a la presencia de lo jacobeo en la ciudad, patente hoy en día en las veinte representaciones de todo tipo, que todavía perduran en las iglesias, conventos y conjunto urbano de Estella.

Estella,like many other historic towns,contains various cities in one.Int his case it contains four: the Jacobean town, the trading town, the military area and the ecclesiastical parts of the city. The bond between Estella and the route of St James has developed in accordance with the following areas: the international historical context of the year 1000, the start of urban centers; the historical landmark of the first city in Navarre and the endowment of the special local juris- diction (Fuero) to the city by Sancho Ramírez, king of Pamplona and Aragon; the development of the first neighborhoods, San Martin, San Miguel and San Juan; and the demographic development of the city. The second part discusses the influence of the pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela on the city, which is present today in the twenty representations that are still there on churches, convents and elsewhere in Estella.
