Uno de cuatro, cuatro y no uno. El Diatésaron de Taciano y el Evangelio cuadriforme

Abstract

The early Church recognized the truth of the Gospel in four different texts (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and not in certain unifying works that arose in the second century: the choice of Marcion for a single Gospel or Tatian’s Diatessaron (one Gospel «through four»). This study analyzes the factors that motivated this tendency to unify the evangelical traditions, with special emphasis on Diatessaron, and the criticisms that led to the eradication of its reading in the liturgy. We conclude with a reflection on the theological implications that emerge from this canonical discernment: how does having to read the one Gospel of Christ from four different texts affect Christian revelation?

La Iglesia naciente reconoció la verdad del evangelio en cuatro textos diversos (Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan) y no en ciertas posturas unificadoras que surgieron en el siglo II: la opción de Marción por un único evangelio, o el Diatésaron de Taciano (un evangelio «a través de cuatro»). El presente estudio analiza los factores que motivaron esta tendencia a la unificación de las tradiciones evangélicas, haciendo especial énfasis en el Diatésaron, y las críticas que condujeron a la erradicación de su lectura en la liturgia de las Iglesias. Concluiremos con una breve reflexión sobre las consecuencias teológicas que se desprenden de este discernimiento canónico: ¿cómo afecta a la revelación cristiana tener que leer el único evangelio de Cristo a partir de cuatro textos diferentes?
