“Las tonadas grandes del Retiro”: transmisión y reutilización de música teatral en la corte madrileña de los últimos Austrias

Abstract

Desde mediados del siglo XVII el teatro cortesano se convirtió en el principal creador y difusor de tonadas que, al mantenerse dentro de la tradición musical hispana, influyeron en los restantes ámbitos musicales. Tras alcanzar el éxito fuera del marco para el que fueron creadas, las más famosas serán ampliamente reutilizadas dando origen a obras nuevas, como el sainete Las tonadas grandes del Retiro de López de Armesto. Esta breve pieza incluye tonadas de tres fiestas cantadas muy representativas de los diversos géneros músico-teatrales cortesanos: Elegir al enemigo, fiesta real de Salazar y Torres, la zarzuela Eco y Narciso y la ópera Celos aun del aire matan, ambas de Calderón.

From the middle of the seventeenth century the court theater became the main creator and diffuser of songs that, by staying within the Hispanic musical tradition, influenced the other musical fields. After achieving success outside the framework for which they were created, the most famous will be widely reused, giving rise to new works, such as the López de Armestos’ sainete Las tonadas grandes del Retiro. This brief piece includes tunes from three sung plays very representatives of the various court musician-theater genres: Elegir al enemigo, Salazar y Torres’ real play, the zarzuela Eco y Narciso and the opera Celos aun del aire matan, both by Calderón.
